The next Showroom Platform will be held on Thursday, March 4th 2010 at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. We are inviting proposals for live art, performance work, dance and experimental theatre, and welcome proposals for works in progress as well as finished pieces. We are unable to offer a performance fee, but we can provide technical support, accommodation, and travelling expenses.

The following morning, we will invite the artists and audience members to join us for breakfast to discuss the work and receive feedback.

If you want to be considered for the upcoming Platform, please send a proposal no later than Thursday February 18th. Your proposal should include a description of the work you would like to show, a CV, and an outline of your technical requirements. Links to supporting material are welcomed.

Siân Robinson Davies: Picture Object Performance Series
A number of short chapters that use object, image and word arrangements to build up visual syntax, which produce pictorial puns and word plays. Pictures enter the three-dimensional world of things as those things chase their names.

Showroom: Y Term Cymraeg am ‘Road Trip’
At the end of July this year, Showroom went on a journey from Aberystwyth to the National Eisteddfod in Bala, stopping at twenty sites along the way that have played a part in the history of performance in Wales. This is the story of our journey.

Ar ddiwedd mis Gorffennaf eleni fe aeth Showroom ar daith o Aberystwyth i’r Eisteddfod Genedlaethol yn y Bala, gyda’r bwriad o ymweld ag ugain o safleoedd sydd wedi chwarae rhan yn hanes perfformio yng Nghymru. Dyma gofnod ein taith.

Stephanie Mold: Hello Gümüshane
“The mayor of Gümüshane, a town in Eastern Anatolia, visited Lentos Museum of Modern Art in Linz and fell in love with the chairs. I know this because I was working as a museum assistant watching him. Instead of using those chairs as functional accessories, he was inspecting them as if they were part of the exhibition. Then he told me that he was paying a visit to Linz as there is a Turkish community from Gümüshane living here and that he would like to buy some of the chairs for his town. Unfortunately they were not for sale.
After he left I started to ask myself how Gümüshane might look like. So I decided to travel there by bus and to bring him a chair as a present. A museum assistant leaving the homogeneous landscape of the museum going on a road trip lasting more than 50 hours – with a chair.”

“Ymwelodd maer Gümüshane, tref yn Nwyrain Antaolia, ag Amgueddfa Celf Fodern Lentos yn Linz ac fe ddisgynnodd mewn cariad gyda’r cadeiriau yno. Mi rydw i’n gwybod hyn gan fy mod i wedi ei wylio gan fy mod yn gweithio yn yr amgueddfa fel cynorthwyydd. Yn hytrach na defnyddio’r cadeiriau yn ôl eu pwrpas ymarferol, roedd o’n edrych arnyn nhw fel eu bod nhw’n rhan o’r arddangosfa. Fe ddywedodd wrtha’i ei fod o’n ymweld â Linz gan fod cymuned Twrcaidd o Gümüshane yn byw yno, ac fe fuasai’n hoffi prynu rhai o’r cadeiriau i fynd yn ôl adref i’w dref. Yn anffodus, nid oeddent ar werth.

Ar ôl iddo adael, dechreuais ofyn i fy hun sut le oedd Gümüshane. Felly fe benderfynais drafaelio yno ar fws gyda chadair yn anrheg i’r maer. Cynorthwyydd amgueddfa yn gadael tirwedd unffurf yr amgueddfa ar daith a fyddai’n para dros 50 awr – gyda chadair.”

For Y Term Cymraeg am ‘Road Trip’, Showroom will travel to sites and locations that have played a part in the history of performance art in Wales. Their journey will conclude at the Eisteddfod where they will present a performance lecture, sharing documentation and traces from the visited sites.

Thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to our showroom shortcuts wrap up sessions during the late-shift of Living Landscapes this week (especially Zoe Laughlin for her microscopic interventions). 

We have packed up over two hundred cue cards of power-points, drawings, gestures, objects, and  microscopic images (mainly the terrain of Mike Pearson’s head) and are heading to Zagreb to reconfigure the material within PSi 15. As part of the Living Landscapes Conference starting today, Showroom will present Showroom Short Cuts. Members of Showroom and guests will choose their individual routes through each day of the conference, employing a variety of techniques and technologies to map, document and trace the events taking place. As a working hypothesis, we will imagine the conference itself as a landscape to navigate through. Among the things we collect will be objects, microscopic images, gestures, drawings and powerpoint slides. From these an index of the conference will be developed that will provide stimulus for daily wrap-up sessions that aim to enable new perspectives on the conference and the issues it addresses by presenting different journeys through the conference day: what have I missed, what else has happened, how have other people experienced the same event?
